“It Powers America”

By Phoenix Mertin

Peyton Sterling wrapped up his internship with the AVECC operations department in Pocola earlier this month. This internship is part of Peyton’s curriculum to earn his associate degree in applied science as a high-voltage line technician at OSUIT in Okmulgee.

“I’ve done some electrical work before, and I wanted to step it up, so [now I’m] working on power lines,” he said. “[AVECC] is a good place to do it.”

Despite being a physically demanding industry, Peyton enjoys the nature of the work. “It powers America,” he said.

During his time with the AVECC Pocola crew, some of his favorite things about the job were “the environment, the different types of work, being in different locations, and how you really get to focus on what you’re doing. It’s pretty intense,” Peyton said. “And the guys are great.”

Aside from the camaraderie, Peyton also loved the teamwork he experienced. “The crew out there is awesome,” he said, gesturing towards the bucket trucks and linemen. “We all work together, and that’s how a job gets put together.”

“It makes it all go by fast and smooth.”
