Locals Serving Locals - 2023 Poteau BalloonFest

Locals Serving Locals - 2023 Poteau BalloonFest

Thursday, October 19 - Saturday, October 21

The Poteau, Oklahoma, Chamber of Commerce's dedication to their community is fully displayed during their annual Poteau BalloonFest. This beloved event has been a fixture in LeFlore County for 16 years, drawing in an impressive 30,000 visitors to the rural community each year. The festival showcases the community's beauty and talent and is a prime example of how locals can support one another.

The Poteau BalloonFest is a unique event that offers something for everyone. With 14 hot air balloons on display at the 2023 event, attendees can witness the magic of these colorful giants as they take to the sky. In addition to the balloons, there is a carnival, bull riding, petting zoo, monster trucks, and delicious food galore. The festival is focused on families, with plenty of activities for kids and adults alike.

"It looks like a big fair." shared Cassie Beger, Event and Membership Coordinator for the Poteau Chamber of Commerce. "When you enter the gate, you see the big Ferris wheel, the hot air balloons, and the Great American Kites. It is just such a neat atmosphere. We [the Poteau BalloonFest] are geared around kids and adults. This year, we will have bull riding, live music, and things that offer more for adults."

Cassie was born and raised in Poteau. She has volunteered for many years in previous festivals and cherishes her BalloonFest memories. As this is her first year serving the BalloonFest from a chamber role, she shared her excitement for all the 2023 festival has in store.

The festival not only provides an opportunity for the community to come together and have fun, but it also serves as a gateway to other opportunities for local businesses. Vendors from seven states participate in the event, offering a variety of food, entertainment, and crafts for attendees to enjoy. The festival has a $5 entry fee valid through both Friday and Saturday, as well as a free preview of the festival on Thursday night.

Behind the scenes, the Poteau Chamber has a small but dedicated staff of three employees: Karen Wages, the CEO; Cassie Beger, the Event and Membership Coordinator; and Shona Alphin, who serves in a part-time accounting role. However, the festival's success is only possible with the countless volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure everything runs smoothly. From setting up the hot air balloons to serving food and drinks, these volunteers are the backbone of the event.

Overall, the Poteau BalloonFest is a community celebration and a testament to the power of locals serving locals. With its impressive attendance numbers and ability to bring people together, this festival will continue making priceless memories in LeFlore County for years to come.
