From Backyard Projects to Power Lines

AVECC's 2025 Lineman Scholarship and Internship Recipient
Cash Wilson, a homeschooled senior from Alma, has recently been awarded the prestigious 2025 Arkansas Valley Electric Cooperative (AVECC) Lineman Scholarship and Internship. This award will provide him with a comprehensive scholarship to ASU-Newport and a paid internship while in school.
Cash has always harbored a passion for working outdoors and using his hands to make a meaningful impact in people's lives. His journey on this career path is driven by a deep understanding of the critical role of maintaining power in homes and ensuring community connectivity. "When I look up and see power flowing and people's homes being fueled and realize that I can help make a difference, that's what I want to do," he said enthusiastically. This dedication to both his craft and community truly distinguishes Cash.
"I look forward to learning about a trade that few people understand. I am always trying to learn something new, and with this lineman scholarship, I plan to figure out how it all works and how to fix it. I knew I wanted to go down this road, but this [scholarship] was a nod in the right direction for me to pursue it.
In the fall, Cash will commence his studies at Arkansas State University—Newport, where he will pursue a technical certificate in High-Voltage Lineman Technology. This program will give him the technical expertise and skills essential for installing, repairing, servicing, and maintaining electrical power lines and associated equipment. Additionally, the program offers pole climbing, pole testing, equipment maintenance, and pole top rescue training.
