Magic and Electricity

by Gracie Spinks
Magic and electricity are two nouns that play hand in hand at Arkansas Valley Electric. For the past 20 years the co-op has been sponsoring the “Making Accidents Disappear” magic show starring Scott Davis. This magic show urges the importance of being safe around electricity and teaches the children, in an educational way, how to behave in such a way.
Scott Davis is the magic man of electricity and has been for over 20 years. He is also a husband, father, and pastor from Hot Springs, Arkansas. Davis started out working at an advertising agency and then left for magic. “I always say I got out of advertising and went into magic because it’s less deceptive.” When he found a common interest in the co-op and magic, he came up with the idea to create a magic show. “I just said, hey, what if we have a magic show that teaches kids how to behave safely around electricity?” The rest was history, and now Davis has been doing 300 shows a year for the co-op, Arkansas and beyond.
Over the years Scott has perfected the details of the show, and the key to that is teaching the kids that “electricity is a tool.” In his performance he pulls out a toolbox full of tools such as a hammer, pliers, and an electrical outlet. Davis teaches the children that since it is a tool, if they use it correctly, it is helpful. If they use it in a playful manner they can hurt themselves. In addition to the show the co-op also has a high voltage safety trailer and circuit boards for students to use in their classrooms. Scott teaches the children that electricity is not bad. “We can’t stay away from it. We use it every day.” Davis acknowledges the reality that electricity is a part of our lives, more and more each day. “We need to teach kids about safety and electricity, that is not at the same time vilifying it.” “Making Accidents Disappear” helps to indicate to the children they should not fear electricity but use it safely and responsibly.
Arkansas Valley is a proud sponsor of “Making Accidents Disappear.” Each show that is given is completely free for all schools and organizations. The co-op knows the impact the show has on the communities and is thankful for Scott Davis’s dedication to the community, safety, and Arkansas Valley Electric.
